On one night in 2007, two journalists, Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey were arrested by a County Sheriff in Maricopa. The two journalists had unearthed grand jury proceedings that were after information from reporters who covered stories on the Sheriff.

Shockingly, the grand jury went further to issue orders to obtain the identity of readers of online stories on the same. The pair sued the county on account of breaching their First Amendment rights.

Larkin and Lacey received $3.75 million as the settlement upon winning the case. They have since dedicated the entire sum to funding migrant rights groups and organizations in the state of Arizona.

The duo is co-founders Village Voice Media which runs 13 newspapers across the United States. Mike and Jim also co-founded Phoenix New Times a free weekly newspaper in the city of Phoenix in Arizona.
